I'm going to be teaching AP Spanish Language next year. What the hell? I haven't really had travel experience (other than my few weekends in Puerto Rico while in high school, before I even knew as much Spanish as I do now) and it's only going to be my 3rd year of teaching. But they want me to teach AP! Over people who have been teaching for 10+ years! I feel special. I have no idea what AP is all about (my school only had honors classes, AP came about 5 years after I graduated), therefore I have to go to a week-long institute in Vermont this summer to learn about the test and strategies for teaching the course. I'm a bit excited, although it means I've committed to teaching here next year! I'll also have two sections of Spanish 4 Honors and two section of Spanish 1 College Prep. I could've had 2Honors (which always turns out to be my favorite class), but I think I'd get completely bored having all honors classes, although I deserve it!
In addition to my new teaching assignments (I've only taught 1CP, 2H, 2CP, and 3CP thus far), I've been conducting interviews recently. Yes, me, conducting interviews (as part of a 4-person team). You see, I'll be the only returning member of our Spanish department. Of the 5 people, there's me, 2 who are moving out of state and getting married (really sad because they're my favorite), 1 who made it known from the beginning of the year that she was only there for a year (she's not used to the urban setting; she's only taught in the extremely white neighborhoods of Maine), and 1 who was no asked to come back because she is not certified to teach Spanish (she has bilingual education certification and has been at the school for 17 years, but the state no longer recognizes bilingual education, thus her certificate is invalid. very messed up). So, yes, one of the French teachers and I, who came in on the same year, will be the "senior members" of the department... after only 2 years! Craziness.
But anyways, I am sort've excited about next year (of course that's how I always am at the end of the school year, but by October I'm ready to quit again!), but nervous about being well enough prepared for the courses. I really need to brush up my upper-level language skills this summer, and build up my vocabulary.
Ok, well, that's what I've been thinking about this Memorial Day Weekend. I hope your weekend has been equally as... exciting!
